Best Man Guide: Your best friend is getting married. Now what?
Wouldn't it be great if your only duty as best man was to plan your friend's last night of being single (although this is undoubtedly the most enjoyable part of the job).
To ensure that you are prepared, we have provided a checklist to ensure that you are up for the task:
1. Make sure that you are available for all pictures. Your role is an important one.
2. Do you realize you will most likely serve as a legal witness? This means you must be present to sign the marriage license, usually immediately after the ceremony.
3. Have your toast well prepared. Don't memorize but do be sincere. And you probably know this, but it should be said, keep it tasteful. Jokes are good, but not ones at the expense of the bride or the groom
4. Want to be a hero? Dance with the bride after the groom and their fathers. It shows good manners, an acceptance of the bride as your friend and, if your single, it will score you big points with the bachelorettes at the reception.
5. Make sure to get attire for the wedding based on the instructions from the bride. This is, ultimately, her day.
6. You will be a good best man if you're really available to the groom that day. Drive him to the ceremony. Take stress of him by making sure that all the groomsmen and ushers are accounted for and dressed appropriately. You can also go over the seating procedure with the ushers, as they are often confused about their actual obligations.
7. They're going on a honeymoon. Be a hand and return the groom's tuxedo. You should ask him when it's due at the rental facility and get it there on time. Don't make him come home to a late fee bill .
8. It is a good idea to go in with the ushers and groomsmen on a gift that is presented at the bachelor party.
9. Offer to assist the bride's family in logistics, transportation and everything else required to plan the big day. It never hurts to ask and it makes a good impression.
10. Carry the bride's ring in you pocket. Oh yeah. You forgot you're in charge of the ring. This is so paramount it goes without saying. Don't lose the ring!
